The Difference between an Architect and a Designer

Are you looking for a residential architect, a medical facility designer, or someone in between? How do you know which person to hire? Both individuals will do the same type of work, but with some key differences. For example, one focuses on build codes and structural design, while the other focuses on creating functional, dynamic spaces.

This article reveals some of the differences and why that will matter to you and your project.

Definitions and Job Descriptions

Architecture involves space planning, structural integrity, and coordinating with builders to see plans completed to specification. This career requires years of education and specialized training, including history, design, and knowledge of construction.

Although your architectural firm will not be the builders on your project, they must understand how walls are constructed, how doors are framed, and which materials to choose in order to create a structurally sound building.

Designers can also produce plans and make changes. However, they generally start from an existing structure and cannot make changes to its core. Still, they must have an understanding of build codes and safety regulations, and may also work with engineers and contractors.

The overall goal of designers, however, is to create functional and energy-efficient spaces that are also eye-catching and visually interesting. In addition to floor plans, they may work with lighting, colors, furniture, and space planning to create a strong vision for each structure.

Education

A commercial or residential architect can only use that title following education, training, and licensure. All states require at least five years of schooling from an accredited institution.

Depending on the location, the requirements are either a five-year bachelor’s degree in architecture or a four-year architectural studies program in combination with a Master of Architecture degree.

Designers may come from a number of related backgrounds and fields, including those with experience in architecture who have not completed licensure and registration. Most designers study lighting, space planning, and structural basics and hold a bachelor’s degree in interior design.

Licenses, Titles, and Credentials

The owner of an architectural firm must be licensed and registered with the state. Registration requires the accredited education as listed above, additional experience and training, having liability insurance, and passing a state-proctored examination. This registration is required for both professional and legal purposes because certain projects require licensure.

Since not all states license designers, there are no nationwide regulations governing them. However, there are many recognitions, licenses, and accreditations, depending on the state. In order to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam, for example, a designer must have earned a degree in interior design and have at least two years of work experience.

When You Will Use

If your project requires new construction or large-scale renovations, contact a commercial or residential architect. Most of their projects involve a contractor and builder, with an emphasis on structural planning and adherence to building codes. A designer may be best for a single task that needs a practical approach and does not require major structural changes. However, in many cases, both are essential and part of the same process. For big projects, however, consider hiring an architecture firm that offers both construction planning and design.
